The History of Still Waters Massage Clinic & Institute

Jennifer Sewell, CEO of S.W.M.I.    I started my career in Massage Therapy when I was 21 years old — I was a new mother experiencing tremendous back pain. I lived in the Midwest at the time, and came across a massage school that offered a certificate in Swedish Massage. I immediately signed up!!! I thought that I would at least be able to heal myself and possibly start a new career. Little did I know what was ahead of me……

After I completed my certificate the fall of 1998, I found out I was pregnant again with baby number two. My husband and I decided to spend our first Christmas in Seattle with his family. When we arrived, we fell in love with Seatlle and decided to make a change and move here! After understanding the Washington requirements to practice massage therapy, I had to go through another massage program. So I visited all the Seattle Massage schools to decide which one I would attend, and chose Seatle Massage School in Greenlake. By the time I finally graduated (after a mini maternity leave), Seattle Massage School had been sold, and I graduated in November of 2000 from Ashmead College.

And the story of Stil Waters Massage begins………

Initially and like many new massage therapists, I started practicing out of my home. I also worked 2 days/week at Microsoft providing corporate massage. I promoted Still Waters Massage to my Microsoft customers and slowly began building my practice. It was a lot of hard work with 2 toddlers and a new business, but somehow I made it work. I also provided home visits with a few clients who were disabled. I quickly learned the incredible impact of massage and how it helps people heal. I also studied and became certified in small animal massage. I worked on dogs and cats for about a year. Then came baby number three!

In 2003, I took another mini maternity leave, and resumed my practice by working at a spa for 2 years. After the spa, I took a job at Myohealth in Marysville and I did billing, bookkeeping, and massage. At that time I applied and became a provider for Healthways and Regence. I then applied for a position at Tulalip Tribes to provide massage therapy for their employees. I was offered the job and covered Bingo, Quil Ceda, and Tulalip. I met many wonderful people and continued to build my massage practice with my insurance providerships.

In the summer of 2008, I decided to open Still Waters Massage to the public with my first storefront! I chose the location of Snohomish, because I love it here. Part of my business plan was to add a Massage Therapy School to teach and train future therapists the art of massage. I wrote a curriculum and presented it to the state of Washington. In the fall of 2010 I received approval, and Still Waters Massage Institute was born!!! I began both day and night programs and am happy to congratulate both classes on their completion. We are currently in the beginning of our 2nd year and going strong. I believe in building a strong community and want to make a difference in the health and daily lives of many different people. I believe massage therapy is for everyone and is at the core of true healthcare!!!

I wish to express my sincere appreciation to family and friends who have supported me on this journey; to every massage client I’ve had over the years; and to my students – I’ve learned from all of you!

Special thanks to my children, Alexis, Celinda & Ethan; S>G>; Sheila Bath; Nicole for being my first student; Rene; Shaylee; Kelly; Jennifer; Lorina; Jeff Sewell; my Mom. You have all supported, inspired, and taught me! And of course to Bickford Espresso for all of the terrific coffees!

Truly,

Jennifer Sewell, LMP
